Brandi Carlile made room onstage for her opening acts on Saturday with sit-ins from Celisse and Lake Street Dive. The guest-filled performance at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul, MN came as part of the singer-songwriter’s Beyond These Silent Days Tour.
Midway through Carlile’s main set, which featured beloved originals like “The Story”, “The Mother”, and more, she brought out celebrated guitarist and vocalist Celisse Henderson. Celisse served in 2019 as a singer in Phish guitarist Trey Anastasio‘s Ghosts of the Forest project and has since risen to prominence with breakout sets at The Peach Music Festival in 2021 and 2022. She joined Carlile on her pairing of David Bowie‘s “Space Oddity” and Radiohead‘s “Creep”, before leaving Brandi to finish out her set with a run of originals including “Right on Time”, “Sinners”, “Saints and Fools”, “The Joke” and “Party of One”.
Coming back out for the encore, Carlile once again had Celisse in tow as they took on the latter’s original, “Freedom”. Celisse stuck around to lend a searing guitar solo to the following reading of Joni Mitchell‘s “Woodstock”, which has taken on added significance since Brandi joined the legendary singer-songwriter at Newport Folk Festival last month for the 78-year-old’s first full performance in over 20 years.
It was then time for a quick line change as Celisse tagged out in favor of Lake Street Dive. Carlile and the neo-soul group honored yet another towering female artist with a cover of Bonnie Raitt‘s “Nick of Time”, a song Lake Street Dive released earlier in the month in anticipation of the group’s Fun Machine covers EP.
Lake Street Dive then departed the stage, leaving the headliner to finish out her show with “Hold Out Your Hand”, “Stay Gentle”, and finally a solo rendition of Harold Arlen‘s “Over The Rainbow”. Carlile would later write of the show on Twitter, “Last night was my favorite show we’ve ever played here. Maybe one of my favorites ever. It was perfect spiritual alignment.”
