Coldplay, Natalie Imbruglia, Jacob Collier and more delivered a tribute to the late Olivia Newton-John, who sadly died on August 8, last night at London’s Wembley Stadium. The collaborators offered “Summer Nights” from the Grease soundtrack.
Coldplay is currently in the midst of six-night run at Wembley. Toward the end of the concert on Tuesday, the band — performing in the round from a smaller “C-stage” — welcomed pedal steel guitarist Nicole Lawrence for a rendition of “Sparks” from their 2000 debut LP, Parachutes. Coldplay frontman then brought out Jacob Collier on keys and singer Natalie Imbruglia to perform the Ednaswap song “Torn,” a cover of which was Imruglia’s hit debut single in 1997.
Next, the collaborators delivered “Summer Nights” in honor of Olivia Newton-John. The iconic song from Grease was originally penned by the musical’s creators Jim Jacobs and Warren Casey. In the film, “Summer Nights” is sung from the perspective of Newton-John’s character Sandy and John Travolta’s Danny. Martin and Imbruglia — who hails from Australia as did Olivia — delivered the song in a similar fashion.
