Goose Welcomes Lucius & Jason Hann In Los Angeles

Goose returned to Los Angeles on Sunday for a concert at The Greek Theatre, by far their biggest play yet in the City Of Angels. The quintet brought out Lucius‘ Jess Wolfe and Holly Laessig to add backing vocals on two songs to end the evening’s first set and closed the show with a “Hot Tea” featuring The String Cheese Incident percussionist Jason Hann.

On February 7 and 8, 2020 Goose made their Los Angeles debut opening for Pigeons Playing Ping Pong at The Troubadour as part of their first West Coast tour. The band returned to L.A. this past January with a headlining show at the 1,200-capacity Fonda Theater. Less than seven months later Goose topped a bill featuring support from Lawrence at the 5,900-capacity Greek Theatre.

Fittingly, the five-piece began their first of two sets at the Greek with the geographically-appropriate “California Magic.” The song written by guitarist Rick Mitarotonda was debuted by Goose in Washington D.C. back in March. Multi-instrumentalist Peter Anspach laid down a fierce organ solo between verses. Next, Mitarotonda’s high-octane riffage was on display during both “Echo Of A Rose” and a trip goin’ down to “Rockdale.” The band then showed off a different side of their songwriting with “A Western Sun” and laid down a version of Anspach’s “Pancakes” fueled to a massive peak by Rick.

“We’re gonna bring up some special guests for these next ones. Everybody please welcome Holly and Jess from the band Lucius to the stage,” Anspach told the crowd. “They had us sit-in with their band at Newport Folk Fest and we have since been called Goocius,” Peter added referring to a take on Shuggie Otis’ “Strawberry Letter 23” he and Mitarotonda played on during Lucius’ set at the historic festival last month in Newport, Rhode Island.

Holly and Jess initially provided backing vocals on Goose’s first cover of Peter Gabriel’s “In Your Eyes” since July 9, 2021 — a span of 80 shows. Laessig and Wolfe stuck around to sing harmonies on the “Slow Ready” that ended Goose’s first set at the Greek.

“Slow Ready” is one of 10 tracks featured on Goose’s recently released studio album, Dripfield. The Connecticut-based band pulled exclusively from Dripfield for their second set in Los Angeles after opening the frame with an adventurous “Madhuvan.” A fairly straight forward “Borne” came next before Goose played expansive versions of “Hungersite” and “Dripfield” for the next 30 minutes.

Rick told the audience the band only had 12 minutes left and would use all the time by staying on stage instead of taking an encore break. Goose then lit into the beloved “Hot Tea” with Peter welcoming Jason Hann to guest on percussion. Hann took over Jeff Arevalo‘s rig and played a solo before Mitarotonda shredded to conclude “Hot Tea” and the concert. “It’s been a dream come true to play at the Greek,” Anspach noted and thanked both the fans and the band’s guests.
