Gov’t Mule Jams On The Grateful Dead With Trombone Shorty In South Carolina [Photos/Videos]

Gov’t Mule and Trombone Shorty & Orleans Avenue brought their run of collaborative concerts to a close this weekend with a trio of shows in the Southeast, with the penultimate show in Columbia, SC featuring a group jam on a Grateful Dead classic. Saturday’s show took place at Township Auditorium ahead of the final co-headlining show in Outer Banks, NC on Sunday.

Troy “Trombone Shorty” Andrews and Orleans Avenue opened the show on Saturday with a set of upbeat, New Orleans-style brassy funk. After that came Mule, led by singer/guitarist Warren Haynes. The group’s 11-song set featured a bevy of covers, beginning with the opening rendition of The Staple Singers‘ “Hammer and Nails”. Mule also touched on The Allman Brothers Band‘s catalog, taking songs from Haynes’ tenure in the group and beyond with “Mountain Jam” sandwiched between the original “Game Face”.

Midway through Mule’s set, Trombone Shorty emerged to lend his horn to a jam centered around the Grateful Dead’s “The Other One”. The Grammy-winning multi-instrumentalist also stuck around for “Feel Like Breaking Up Somebody’s Home”, an Ann Peebles cover found on Mule’s 2021 album, Heavy Load Blues.

Bidding farewell to Trombone Shorty, Gov’t Mule wound down its set with “Time To Confess”, Memphis Slim‘s “Mother Earth”, “Blind Man in the Dark”, and finally the Haynes-penned Allman Brothers track “Soulshine”.
