Gov’t Mule Welcomes Micah Nelson At Star Lake Amphitheatre

67

Micah Nelson (Particle Kid) was Gov’t Mule‘s special guest during the band’s Outlaw Music Festival set at Star Lake Amphitheatre on Sunday. The quartet brought out Micah for a cover of Neil Young’s “Cortez The Killer” at the Burgettstown, Pennsylvania venue.

Sunday’s Outlaw Music Festival stop at Star Lake featured sets from Particle Kid, Larkin Poe, Gov’t Mule, ZZ Top and Willie Nelson & Family. Micah, Willie Nelson’s son, performed as part of his father’s band for the full headlining set.

Gov’t Mule opened with a rare take on the traditional song “John The Revelator” yesterday at the shed near Pittsburgh. The band consisting of guitarist Warren Haynes, bassist Jorgen Carlsson, drummer Matt Abts and multi-instrumentalist Danny Louis then paired “Stone Cold Rage” and the title track from 2017’s Revolution Come…Revolution Go.

The quartet looked to their most recent album next, the blues-oriented Heavy Load Blues for a take on the Muddy Waters classic “I Asked Her For Water (She Gave Me Gasoline)” before offering up an interpretation of “Dreams” by The Allman Brothers Band. Mule went on to play live staple “Game Face” and then teamed with Micah Nelson on “Cortez The Killer.” Haynes explained the Pittsburgh region will always remind him of the Neil Young song as Gov’t Mule first performed “Cortez The Killer” at the tiny Rosebud club in the city back in 1998. Warren and Micah shared vocal duties and each shredded on the tune Young originally released on his 1975 album Zuma.

Gov’t Mule went it alone for Haynes’ signature song “Soulshine” and their arrangement of Blind Willie Johnson’s “Dark Was The Night, Cold Was The Ground” to close the set. Watch clips featuring Micah Nelson joining forces with Gov’t Mule on “Cortez The Killer” below:
