Gov’t Mule’s Warren Haynes Plays Duane Allman’s Goldtop Les Paul Guitar In Ohio

65

Gov’t Mule guitarist Warren Haynes used Duane Allman’s iconic 1957 Les Paul Goldtop for two songs last night during the band’s co-headlining concert in Huber Heights, Ohio with Trombone Shorty & Orleans Avenue. Haynes strapped on the famed axe at The Rose Music Center At The Heights for a take on The Allman Brothers Band’s “Dreams” towards the end of Mule’s set as well as for the evening’s “Blues Before Sunrise” encore.

The Allman Brothers Band co-founder Duane Allman bought the Gibson guitar in 1968. Skydog used the instrument during the recording sessions for the first two ABB studio albums. Additionally, the Les Paul was the axe Duane played on “Layla” for Derek & The Dominos’ 1970 LP, Layla & Other Assorted Love Songs.

Duane’s 1957 Les Paul Goldtop was brought to the show by The Big House Museum team. Haynes, a member of The Allman Brothers Band from 1989 through 1997 and again from the tail-end of 2000 through the group’s final shows in 2014, made the instrument sing on “Dreams.” Gregg Allman penned the song featured on the ABB’s self-titled 1969 debut album. Warren also put the axe to use on a cover of Elmore James’ “Blues Before Sunrise” to end the night.

“Blues Before Sunrise” was recorded by Mule for their latest studio album, 2021’s Heavy Load Blues. The quartet played a number of other songs from their first blues LP last night. Gov’t Mule took on the Heavy Load Blues original “Wake Up Dead” in Ohio after opening with the contemplative “Traveling Tune” and hard-hitting “Thorazine Shuffle.” The band followed “Wake Up Dead” with Junior Wells’ “Snatch It Back And Hold It” from Heavy Load Blues incorporating the “Hold It Back” jam created in the studio. The album was also represented in Huber Heights by takes on the Ann Peebles-popularized “Feel Like Breaking Up Somebody’s Home” and “Make It Rain” by Tom Waits. Mule fit the beloved “Soulshine” into the set and closed the frame with a cover of Al Green’s “I’m A Ram.”

Gov’t Mule and Trombone Shorty & Orleans Avenue play in Roanoke, Virginia tonight.
