Greensky Bluegrass & Oliver Wood Cover ‘Midnight Rider’ In New Jersey

118

Greensky Bluegrass and The Wood Brothers brought their joint tour to the Jersey Shore on Saturday. The concert at the Seaside Heights Beach Stage in Seaside Heights, New Jersey saw Oliver Wood once again joining GSBG for The Allman Brothers Band classic “Midnight Rider.”

Following an opening set from The Wood Brothers including favorites like “Luckiest Man” and “The Muse,” Greensky got their set underway with “New & Improved” off their 2022 album Stress Dreams. The band would also offer the LP’s “Reasons To Stay” and the title track elsewhere in the set. Following “New & Improved,” the quintet embarked on a three-song seamless sequence bookended by staples “Just to Lie” and “Burn Them,” which encompassed “Hold On.” GSBG then paired up “While Waiting” and “Kerosene.”

Next, Oliver Wood emerged to help Greensky out on “Midnight Rider.” The collaborators gave a preview of what their tour team-ups might look like when they performed the song together previously at West Virginia’s 4848 Festival in July. While Wood Bros’ Jano Rix didn’t join in Jersey, Oliver Wood and GSBG mandolinist Paul Hoffman provided some powerful harmonies on the Idlewild South cut Gregg Allman co-wrote with ABB roadie Robert Kim Payne.

The rest of Greensky Bluegrass’ set also included notables like their first cover of John Hartford’s “Steam Powered Aeroplane” in over 50 concerts, according to Phantasy Tour, as well as original favorites like “Fixin To Ruin,” “I’d Probably Kill You” and a set closing “Leap Year.” The quintet would also devote their encore to songs from one of New Jersey’s most famous sons, Bruce Springsteen, performing “Dancing In The Dark” for the first time in nearly 80 shows, as per PT, as well as “Atlantic City” to wrap up the evening on the Jersey Shore.
