Lee “Scratch” Perry Box Set ‘King Scratch’ To Honor Late Reggae Pioneer [Listen]

313

A career-spanning Lee “Scratch” Perry OD box set is headed for release to honor the one-year anniversary of the dub architect’s passing. Out September 2nd, King Scratch (Musical Masterpieces from the Upsetter Ark-ive) marks the first posthumous release from the legendary producer since his death last August.

King Scratch offers a retrospective of Perry’s work spanning seven decades. Through his original compositions and production work, Perry helped bring reggae music from Jamaica to the rest of the world and collaborated with an array of artists including Bob Marley & The WailersThe Clash, Beastie Boys, Mad Professor, and many more.

The Deluxe King Scratch box set stretches 109 tracks across four LPs and four CDs, featuring some of his best known work alongside previously unreleased recordings including a mix of “Junior Murvin’s powerful ‘Police And Thieves’, UK chart-buster ‘Hurt So Good’ by Susan Cadogan, and the Upsetters’ boss reggae classic ‘Return Of Django’, as well as numerous major Jamaican hits.” The Deluxe edition also features a 50-page illustrated book written by Perry’s official biographer Dave Katz with pictures from photographer Adrian Boot and a two-sided full-color poster.

The pared-down 2LP and 2CD versions of the King Scrtach box set concentrate more on Scratch’s prolific output of the ’60s and ’70s. His impact on the proliferation of reggae during this period is illustrated through his production of Jamaican hitmakers including Max Romeo and Junior Byles, his own work with The Upsetters, and more. The simplified releases also host “extensive notes on the man whose talent and imagination took reggae to new heights of excellence.”

Along with the announcement, Trojan Records shared a 7″ mix single of Lee “Scratch” Perry & The Upsetters’ “Jungle Lion”. King Scratch (Musical Masterpieces from the Upsetter Ark-ive) is available for pre-order here. Scroll down for the complete tracklists.
