Listen To Frank Zappa Perform ‘Wind Up Workin’ In A Gas Station’ From ‘Zappa ’75: Zagreb/Ljubljana’

20

Frank Zappa‘s sole shows in Yugoslavia are documented on Zappa ’75: Zagreb/Ljubljana, a live archival audio release set to arrive via Zappa Records/UMe on October 14. Out today is the collection’s first single, a previously unreleased embryonic version of “Wind Up Workin’ In A Gas Station.”

The legendary guitarist’s concerts in Zagreb on November 21, 1975 and Ljubljana on November 22, 1975 saw him backed by a short-lived and stripped-down lineup of drummer Terry Bozio, keyboardist Andre Lewis, bassist Roy Estrada, tenor saxophonist/vocalist Napoleon Murphy Brock and alto saxophonist/vocalist Norma Bell. Zappa ’75: Zagreb/Ljubljana presents highlights from each night in the same order featured on the setlists. Producers Ahmet Zappa and FZ archivist Joe Travers chose the best performance of every song to create a live album filled with nearly two and a half hours of previously unreleased music.

The instrumental “Wind Up Workin’ In A Gas Station” prototype was played by Frank Zappa and The Mothers at Hala Tivoli in Ljubljana on November 22, 1975. Zappa would go on to add lyrics before recording “Wind Up Workin’ In A Gas Station” for his 1976 studio album, Zoot Allures. In Ljublijana, now the capital city of Slovenia, Frank goes heavy on fretboard fireworks as drummer Terry Bozzio and bassist Roy Estrada propel the fierce and hard-hitting rock song. Zappa utilizes a distorted wah-wah tone for a furious guitar solo that spans nearly three minutes.
