New Riders of the Purple Sage will revisit the band’s opening set from the last night of the Grateful Dead‘s historic 1972 European tour with a new live album, Lyceum ’72. Recorded on May 26th, 1972, the concert by the psychedelic country forefathers is out on September 23rd via Omnivore Recordings.
“The last night of the Grateful Dead’s 1972 European tour was memorable for a host of reasons, and prime amongst them, was the fun fact that the whole extended musical ‘family’ of the Grateful Dead was reunited at the London gig in the Lyceum Ballroom just off the Strand,” Grateful Dead tour manager Sam Cutler writes in the opening to the album’s liner notes.
The Grateful Dead “family” was present in full force for the final night of the European tour. While Jerry Garcia, Mickey Hart, and Phil Lesh no longer performed with NRPS by 1972, the Dead’s crack sound team was behind the Riders with engineers Betty Cantor, Janet Furman, Bob Matthews, Rosie (McGee), and Wizard—the team who taped what would become Europe ’72—recording the evening’s concert. These previously uncirculated recordings were mixed by current Grateful Dead engineer Jeffrey Norman and mastered by Grammy-winner David Glasser (Anthology Of American Folk Music).
Though their run was not nearly as extensive as the Dead’s European vacation, New Riders of the Purple Sage also performed at England’s Bickershaw Festival earlier in May 1972. After the Dead returned to the U.S., NRPS had one more international date when they played Rock Circus at Olympisch Stadion in Amsterdam with Pink Floyd and Donovan, per the band’s archive.
