Phish Debuts ‘Broken Heart Attack’ Cover At Alpine Valley: Setlist, Recap & The Skinny

64

Phish took the Alpine Valley Music Theatre stage on Sunday to close out a three-night stand in East Troy, Wisconsin and a month on the road. The band finally played a debut for the first time on their Spring + Summer Tour 2022 with drummer Jon Fishman fronting a take on Jerry Reed’s “Broken Heart Attack” towards the end of the second set.

The quartet opened with the rare instrumental “The Landlady” just as they did to start their stellar Alpine Valley finale in 2019. A beginning to the evening straight out of the early ’90s also included classics “Runaway Jim” and “Divided Sky.” Both saw keyboardist Page McConnell accentuate guitarist Trey Anastasio‘s solos with nimble work on the piano. Next came the fifth “46 Days” of the summer. Jon Fishman’s expert drumming fueled a soaring, blissful jam that band patiently built to a crowd-pleasing crescendo. A bit of ambiance followed before Anastasio awkwardly launched “Stealing Time From The Faulty Plan” leaving “46 Days” unfinished.

“Sugar Shack” came next giving bassist Mike Gordon a turn in the vocal spotlight. While the song had given Anastasio fits in the past, he made it through the 2022 debut without incident. “Shade” then filled the ballad slot ahead of McConnell leading his bandmates through “Halfway To The Moon.” Phish closed the mostly uneventful first set with a ferocious “Everything’s Right.” The band stuck pretty close to the song’s progression as Anastasio emphatically wailed on his Languedoc.

More Skinny

Phish came out of the gates for the second set with Apples In Stereo’s “Energy.” The cover was last played on October 20, 2021 and had only been performed four other times since 2013. “Energy” birthed an exploratory passage in which the band pulled off multiple modulations over the course of a mere 12 minutes before reaching for “Gotta Jibboo.” Trey let his siren sound ring out before weaving together one inspired melody after another while Mike and Fish connected on a swinging groove. Anastasio kept the seamless segment by transitioning into “Soul Planet.” The guitarist made his instrument scream with another stream of scorching riffs while McConnell echoed each lick on organ and provided layers of synth underneath. A move into “Rift” came next.

Four songs and 40 minutes into the set, Phish finally took a pause before embarking on the fan favorite “Reba.” The band glided through the composed section and then worked over the heavenly Ebmaj7 to F progression. “Reba” ended sans whisting for the first time in seven renditions. “Martian Monster” followed with Anastasio replacing Fishman behind the kit in the middle of the song. The drummer made his way to centerstage and fronted the band on a debut cover of Jerry Reed’s “Broken Heart Attack.” Fish played vacuum to end a tune country and western artist Jerry Reed originally released on his 1974 album, Tupelo Mississippi Flash. Phish had soundchecked “Broken Heart Attack” earlier in the day.

The first debut of the tour was followed by Fish taking a few victory laps and jumping on the piano as his bandmates played him off with “Hold Your Head Up.” Phish went on to finish “Martian Monster” as Fish hit up the Marimba Lumina before replacing Anastasio behind the kit. “Moses Brown! Moses Heaps! Broken Heart Attack! His trip is shot,” Trey exclaimed while the four-piece started a typically high-energy “Possum.” The group tacked on a typically gorgeous “Slave To The Traffic Light” to end the final set of this year’s Alpine Valley run. Phish came back for an encore featuring both “Waste” and “First Tube.”

After a few weeks off, Phish will return to end Spring + Summer Tour 2022 with four nights at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park over Labor Day Weekend. Livestreams of the first four-night Dick’s run since the band began the tradition in 2011 are available for purchase a LivePhish.com.
