A diverse cast of musicians gathered at Thalia Hall in Chicago, IL on Thursday to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Grateful Dead‘s iconic Europe ’72 live album. The show took place at an official pre-party for this weekend’s inaugural Sacred Rose with a band featuring Eric Krasno (Soulive), Aron Magner (The Disco Biscuits), Ross James and Alex Koford (Terrapin Family Band), and Ric Roberston (Lucius/Oliver Wood).

The event kicked off with an enlightening presentation by famed music photographer Jay Blakesberg, who has photographed the Dead and associated acts since shooting his first concert of theirs in 1978.The quintet featuring Krasno, Magner, James, Koford, and Robertson then took the stage for a two-set show honoring Europe ’72 and other songs from the Grateful Dead catalog.

The first set consisted only of songs featured on Europe ’72 while the second set included an array of familiar Grateful Dead classics reinterpreted by the collective of esteemed improvisers. Mandolinist Sierra Hull and Doom Flamingo‘s Ross Bogan made special guest appearances during the show—both late additions to the bill—and a DJ set by Dead Inside featuring 100% Dead vinyl rounded out the program.
