Tedeschi Trucks Band’s Susan Tedeschi & Los Lobos’ David Hidalgo Play Jerry Garcia’s Alligator Guitar In Berkeley

Tedeschi Trucks Band stopped by the Greek Theatre in Berkeley, California on Saturday. The concert once again saw TTB welcoming members of Wheels Of Soul Tour mates Los Lobos for a pair of choice covers during which Susan Tedeschi played Jerry Garcia’s Alligator guitar. Earlier in the night, Los Lobos guitarist David Hidalgo used the legendary axe.

Alligator was played often by Garcia between May 1971 and late 1973, including as part of the Grateful Dead’s historic Europe ’72 tour. Deadhead Andy Logan, who launched the Grateful Guitars nonprofit, purchased the instrument at a December 2019 Bonham’s auction and has lent the axe to such guitarists as Zach Nugent, Stu Allen and Jeff Mattson over the past few years.

Hidalgo had Alligator in hand when Los Lobos emerged for their set on Saturday night. The guitarist put the cherished instrument to good use for a performance that culminated with three songs from the Grateful Dead live repertoire. Los Lobos dusted off “West L.A. Fadeaway” for the band’s 2022 debut of the cover and just third version since 2019 as per Setlist.FM. Hidalgo also ripped it up on Alligator for the “Not Fade Away”/”Bertha” medley that brought Los Lobos’ performance at The Greek to a close.

TTB kicked off the show with “Yes We Will” from the recently released third installment, I Am The Moon: III. The Fall, in their ambitious I Am The Moon four-part project. Susan led the band through “Yes We Will” ahead of some characteristically scorching guitar work from Derek Trucks. Next, Tedeschi Trucks Band turned to material from I Am The Moon: I. Crescent with “Hear My Dear.”

Following “Part Of Me” and “Do I Look Worried” off 2013’s Made Up Mind, TTB delivered their recent tribute to late multi-instrumentalist Kofi Burbridge, “Soul Sweet Song.” The single is set to land on the fourth and final I Am The Moon: Episode IV. Farewell, wich arrives later this month. A cover of Dr. John’s “I Walk On Guilded Splinters” came next.

TTB then welcomed members of Los Lobos for War’s “The World Is A Ghetto” and the Charlie Segar blues standard “Key To The Highway.” The guest segment saw Susan Tedeschi playing Jerry Garcia’s Alligator guitar in the Bay Area venue Jerry and the Grateful Dead knew well. Tedeschi especially rocked the axe during a big guitar segment on “Key To The Highway” with Trucks as well as Los Lobos’ David Hidalgo and Cesar Rosas.

Next, Tedeschi Trucks Band went it alone for I Am The Moon: I. Crescent’s “Circles ‘Round The Sun” and Derek Trucks’ instrumental epic from the record, “Pasaquan.” The band then dipped into Susan Tedeschi’s solo catalog with “Just Won’t Burn” before closing out the set with the title track to Made Up Mind. TTB returned for a two-song encore beginning with Blind Joe Reynolds’ “Outside Woman Blues” and concluding with The Coasters-recorded “Let’s Go Get Stoned.”
