The Terrapin Family Band played their mashup of “Friend Of The Devil” by the Grateful Dead with Nirvana’s “Lithium” at their concert on Friday at The Guild Theater in Menlo Park, California. Jason Crosby, who has performed the mashup several times over the years, played Jerry Garcia’s famed Alligator guitar (while guitarist Grahame Lesh played keyboards) on “Friend Of The Lithium.”
Guitarist Eric Krasno sat-in with the group for both the first and second set. Keyboardist Melvin Seals accompanied The Terrapin Family Band for set two and the encore.
The mashup came toward the end of the first set when Crosby sang the lyrics to “Friend Of The Devil” while the band played “Lithium.” Ross James, who was playing bass, played Garcia’s 1957 Fender Stratocaster on the subsequent first-set ending “Throwing Stones” that saw Lesh moving over to bass. Alligator emerged once more for the second-set starting “After Midnight.”
