In addition to introducing an entire generation to skateboarding—even if it was only with their thumbs—Tony Hawk is also responsible for helping kids “drop in” to the world of skater music like punk, ska, and more. The soundtracks to the Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater video game series provided a textbook of classic music by everyone from Bad Religion to Goldfinger and beyond.

It turns out, Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater cover bands are more popular than one might expect, with The Downhill Jam in California, Birdman or the Unexpected Virtue of a Tony Hawk Pro Skater Cover Band in Australia, and more. The franchise’s music even served as an early inspiration for Death Kings according to guitarist Mike Gantzer (Aqueous) before the trio began writing original music. One THPS cover band in the U.K. earned unique distinction on Saturday, however, as Tony Hawk himself skated past to sing a couple of tunes.

The 900, named for Hawk’s world debut of a 900º rotation at the 1999 X Games, welcomed the Birdman during its concert at Signature Brew Haggerston in London. While there, Hawk sang a number of songs including Agent Orange‘s “Bloodstains”, which appeared in Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 4 and according to Hawk was “one of my true gateways into punk rock.” He also stuck around for a performance of Goldfinger’s ska staple “Superman” from the original THPS as well as the recently remastered editions of games 1 and 2.

Check out Tony Hawk sitting in with the Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater cover band The 900 in London. Lucky for everyone, Tony didn’t get thrown offstage by some bouncer who didn’t recognize him.
