Upstate New York jam act moe. spent most of the Summer of 2005 opening for the Allman Brothers Band. On August 18, 2005 the five-piece took the opportunity of a rare night off in the middle of the tour to play a headlining show of their own. moe. booked the tiny Revolution Hall in Troy, New York and performed under the moniker the Vinnie Amico Experience.
In fitting fashion, the show started with a drum solo from Vinnie Amico with occasional help from percussionist Jim Loughlin. moe. then showed off their improvisational prowess over the course of a 20+ minute “Yodelittle.” Up next was Chuck Garvey’s “Where Does The Time Go?” which the quintet jammed into the beloved “Rebubula.” After “Rebubula” Amico had his first turn on lead vocals as he fronted the group on a rare cover of “Southbound” by the Allman Brothers Band. Vin would soon return to the front of the stage for the second performance of Sublime’s “What I Got” in moe. history, which was followed by a “So Long” > “Buster” sequence to end the first set.
moe., excuse me, the Vinnie Amico Experience, kept the rarities coming as they opened the second set with just their second (and as of press time final) cover of Jimi Hendrix’s “Manic Depression.” The band then threw fans for a loop with just the fifth-ever performance of “Waiting For The Punchline Reprise” which on this night came ahead of “Waiting For The Punchline.” Up next was one of the improvisational highlights of the evening, a well-jammed “Opium.” A euphoric “New York City” followed and led into the debut cover of “Casey Jones” by the Grateful Dead sung by Amico.
The five-piece ended the second set with a brief attempt at The Beatles’ “Let It Be” ahead of a stellar “The Faker” > “The Pit” sequence. Vinnie had one more turn leading his namesake project for the encore. Amico and his band honored their touring partners the Allman Brothers Band with a cover of the blues classic “One Way Out.” The quintet hadn’t covered the song popularized by the ABB in over two years and have since only played “One Way Out” twice.
