Cincinnati’s own Freekbass played “The Star Spangled Banner” at TQL Stadium in his hometown on Saturday at a Major League Soccer match. The acclaimed bassist delivered an instrumental version of the national anthem before FC Cincinnati battled Columubs Crew to a 2 – 2 draw.

The game was part of the “Hell Is Real Derby” in which the state’s two MLS teams faceoff. “It’s been a lifelong dream to perform the national anthem solo on bass,” explained Freekbass in a press release when his appearance was announced. The bassist teamed with vocalist Sammi Garett to play “The Star Spangled Banner” before a 2019 Cincinnati Reds game. “This will be the first time I’m doing it solo on bass guitar, and I am just so thankful and humbled that FC Cincinnati invited me to be a part of this amazing day.”

“I can’t begin to explain the emotions I felt [on Saturday],” wrote Freekbass on YouTube. “Thank you everyone at FC Cincinnati for asking me to perform this song. It was such an honor and I’ll never forget it.”
