Watch Lake Street Dive Cover The Pointer Sisters’ ‘Automatic’ On A Boston Sidewalk

Lake Street Dive shared a live performance video of The Pointer Sisters hit “Automatic,” captured on a sidewalk in Boston with historical significance for the band. A studio version of the song is set for the group’s upcoming covers EP, Fun Machine: The Sequel.

Lake Street Dive shot the clip for “Automatic” on the same Boston sidewalk where they captured their viral video cover of the Jackson 5’s “I Want You Back,” which inspired the original Fun Machine covers EP in 2012. The band — vocalist Rachael Price, bassist Bridget Kearney, drummer Mike Calabrese and keyboardist Akie Bermiss — shared a similar video of Bonnie Raitt’s “Nick Of Time” in July along with a statement:

“10 years ago, we set up our instruments on a Boston street corner and played one of our favorite cover songs in front of one microphone, with our buddy @10xgreg behind the camera. Very unexpectedly this simple, unadorned representation of how we make music together ended up resonating with millions of people world-wide and completely changing our lives!!!”

Brock Patrick Walsh and Mark Goldenberg co-wrote “Automatic.” The Pointer Sisters recorded the original version of the song and included it on their 1983 album, Break Out. A single released in 1984 cracked the top five of the US Billboard Hot 100.
