Phish rolled out pro-shot video featuring an extended “Kill Devil Falls” played last Wednesday night. The 15-minute version came three songs into the quartet’s one-set concert at Pine Knob Music Theatre in Clarkston, Michigan.
The start of the show at Pine Knob was delayed by over an hour due to storms in the area. Phish decided to go with one long set instead of the usual format to make the most of their time at the venue.
After opening with the rocker “I Never Needed You Like This Before,” the four-piece delivered an adventurous “Everything’s Right” that spanned over 17 minutes. While “Everything’s Right” typically contains plenty of improvisation the same can’t be said for “Kill Devil Falls.” However, the take on the song from 2009’s Joy LP saw the quartet take flight for an inspired jam.
Keyboardist Page McConnell led a transition into blissful territory on electric piano. Guitarist Trey Anastasio then stepped up with a string of anthemic riffs. Drummer Jon Fishman and bassist Mike Gordon laid down a galloping beat while Trey and Page exchanged pretty melodies. Eventually, “Kill Devil Falls” was left unfinished as it faded into the tour’s first “Camel Walk.”
