Umphrey’s McGee shared pro-shot video featuring the live debut of “Fenced In.” The first live performance of the song from the band’s recently released studio album, Asking For A Friend, took place at The Caverns in Pelham, Tennessee this past Saturday, August 20.
Asking For A Friend was issued on July 1 and features 14 tracks. The sextet has been slowly rolling out songs from the LP in concert with “Fenced In” debuted on Saturday and “Always October” premiered on Sunday at The Caverns. Umphrey’s McGee’s two-night stand at the Pelham, Tennessee venue ended a string of dates with The Disco Biscuits.

Umphrey’s McGee Shares Songs That Inspired ‘Asking For A Friend’ Playlist
Guitarist/vocalist Brendan Bayliss wrote “Fenced In” in response to the police killing of George Floyd in May 2020. The song features an expletive (“Hate is a motherfucker/One I could do without”), a first in UM history. Bayliss discussed the call to leave the curse word in the song during an interview featured on The JamBase Podcast. “I was trying to think of what is the worst thing I could say about hate,” Brendan told JamBase’s Andy Kahn. “How do I explain how much I hate hate?”
“Fenced In” was played in the middle of the band’s lone set on Saturday at The Caverns. Umphrey’s stuck to a similar arrangement as found on Asking For A Friend.
