Whitney unveiled two new singles, “Memory” and “County Lines.” The tracks are set to land on the Chicago-based duo’s forthcoming album, Spark, set to arrive via Secretly Canadian on September 16.
Whitney’s Julien Ehlrich and Max Kakacek detailed Spark in June and previewed the album with “Real Love.” The duo and their band performed the lead single on Jimmy Kimmel Live in July. Two singles, “Twirl” and “Blue,” arrived shortly after the Kimmel appearance.
Whitney now follows with the pairing of “Memory” and “County Lines,” which both address different forms of finality.
“The lyrics of ‘Memory’ illustrate someone processing and eventually accepting their fear of death,” the band stated. “Halfway through writing the song our bandmate Will Miller sent along the chords for what would become the outro of the song without ever hearing ‘Memory.’ It was one of those harmonious moments where two separate ideas somehow fit together immediately. The final third speaking to the afterlife in a way we wouldn’t have been able to match with words.”
“Memory” also features a string arrangement from Trey Pollard. “County Lines,” — which deals with the finality of a relationship ending — also contains strings, this time by Rob Moose, as well as saxophone from Sam Gendel.
