Widespread Panic played their original “Casa De Grillo” for the first time since 2014 during their concert Saturday night. The bust-out was part of the second show of a three-night run at Oxbow RiverStage in Napa, California.
Frontman John Bell demonstrated his Spanish singing skills as “Casa Del Grillo” was selected to start the second set. WSP last performed “Casa Del Grillo” on June 17, 2014, making it a gap of 365 shows between performances. The song, which debuted in 2000 and appeared on Panic’s 2001 studio album Don’t Tell the Band, had also not opened a set since July 2003.
Saturday’s first set began with “Little Lilly” opening a Widespread Panic show for the first time since 2010, according to Everyday Companion. The opening half ended with a cover of Warren Zevon’s “Lawyers, Guns & Money.” Set one also included a cover of Bloodkin’s “Can’t Get High,” alongside staple originals “Wondering,” “Up All Night,” “You Should Be Glad,” the instrumental “Happy” and a pairing of the classics “Greta” and “Pigeons.”
The second set was anchored by a seamless “Saint Ex,” “Ride Me High,” “Zambi Jam,” “Ride Me High,” and “Honky Red” sequence. “Porch Song” was tapped for the second set closer role. Other second set selections included “Pleas,” “Party At Your Mama’s House,” “This Part of Town,” “All Time Low” and a cover of “Stop Breakin’ Down Blues.”
Night two’s three-song encore kicked off with “Expiration Day” by Vic Chesnutt and continued with the Solomon Burke popularized rarity, “None of Us Are Free.” Jerry Joseph’s “Climb To Safety” punctuated the concert. Widespread Panic returns to Oxbow RiverStage tonight for the third and final show of the run.
