The next release from Frank Zappa’s vault, Zappa ’75: Zagreb/Ljubljana, documents two concerts played by the late guitarist and his band The Mothers in Yugoslavia on November 21 and 22, 1975 in Zagreb and Ljubljana. Zappa ’75: Zagreb/Ljubljana arrives through Zappa Records/UMe on October 14 featuring previously unreleased highlights from The Maestro’s first and only shows in the country.

Frank Zappa brought a short-lived The Mothers lineup behind the Iron Curtain towards the end of his Fall Tour 1975. The guitarist was backed by bassist Roy Estrada, keyboardist Andre Lewis, tenor saxophonist Napoleon Murphy Brock, drummer Terry Bozio and alto saxophonist Norma Bell for what Zappa described as “Mothers of Invention Yugoslavian Extravaganza.” The iteration wouldn’t last. Frank Zappa archivist Joe Travers detailed the transitions to the guitarist’s band that came soon after the Yugoslavian shows in the set’s liner notes, writing:

“Norma Bell would leave the group before 1976. Although Andre Lewis and Roy Estrada would eventually be dismissed after the touring was over in early 1976 (making this the final Zappa band Roy would play bass in), Frank and Roy’s friendship would continue. Napoleon would leave and eventually come back in 1984. Terry would go on to achieve iconic stature and although he would leave the group in 1978, his contribution to Zappa’s music will live on forever as one of the most special and important drummers of FZ’s career.”

Travers co-produced the 27-track live album with Ahmet Zappa. Zappa ’75: Zagreb/Ljubljana includes the best versions of each song from the run presented in the same order as the show’s setlist. The set contains nearly two and a half hours of previously unreleased music with 2CD and digital editions to be released. The 2CD installment comes with a 32-page booklet incorporating photos from the time period along with Travers’ liner notes, an interview with the crew member who recorded the shows (Davy Moire) and a remembrance from Bozzio complete with an illustration the drummer drew.

Improvisational highlights are noted as “Chunga’s Revenge” and “Zoot Allures” in a press release announcing the set. Additionally, the upcoming live archival release contains early versions of “Filthy Habits,” “Five-Five-Five,” “Wind Up Workin’ In A Gas Station” and more.
