Billy Strings Joins Willie Nelson In Connecticut

Billy Strings has been making the most of his time on Willie Nelson‘s Outlaw Music Festival tour. Strings was the outlaw country legend’s guest once again on Tuesday at the Hartford HealthCare Amphitheater in Bridgeport, Connecticut as were Billy’s bandmates.

Willie Nelson’s headlining set in Bridgeport came after performances from Particle Kid, Brittney Spencer, Larkin Poe and Strings. The bluegrass guitarist emerged for the penultimate song of the frame, a medley of “I’ll Fly Away” and “Will The Circle Be Unbroken?” as he did on other Outlaw stops over the past few nights. This time around, Billy’s bandmates — banjoist Billy Failing, fiddler Alex Hargreaves, mandolinist Jarrod Walker and bassist Royal Masat — joined in on the medley sans instruments by adding backing vocals. “Play it Billy,” Willie exclaimed before Strings’ first of two solos.

Billy Strings delivered a 14-song set in Bridgeport ahead of Willie’s performance. Strings and his bandmates opened by pairing originals “Slow Train” and “This Old World.” The quintet then worked The Dillards’ “Ernest T. Grass” into the traditional “Little Maggie.” Next, Billy looked to 2021’s Renewal for “Nothing’s Working” before leading his ensemble through “Whisper My Name” by New Grass Revival.”

The set continued with a double dose of 2019’s Home via “Away From The Mire” and “Long Forgotten Dream.” A series of covers followed in “A Good Woman’s Love,” “Dusty Miller” and “Summertime” ahead of a set-closing sequence featuring a take on John Hartford’s “With A Vamp In The Middle” splitting the beloved “Dust In A Baggie” and 2021 single “Wargasm.”

Billy is aboard for two more Outlaw Music Festival concerts. First up is a show in Mansfield, Massachusetts on Friday and then comes a stop in Saratoga Springs, New York on Sunday. View a series of fan-shot videos documenting some of Strings’ set in Bridgeport below:
