Bright Eyes Recruit Fan To Sing ‘First Day Of My Life’ In Birmingham

Bright Eyes frontman Conor Oberst passed his microphone to a fan to sing “First Day Of My Life” during the band’s Monday night concert in Birmingham, England. The collaborative version started Bright Eyes’ encore last night at O2 Institute Birmingham.

Oberst began the performance of the song from Bright Eyes’ 2005 LP, I’m Wide Awake, It’s Morning, normally and then asked the crowd, “Do one of you guys know this song?” Conor picked out a fan in the front row and handed her his microphone. The fan did an admirable job singing “First Day Of My Life” as other members of the audience sang along. Oberst kneeled at the front of the stage and urged the crowd member on.

Last night wasn’t the first time this year fans sang at a Bright Eyes show. Oberst left the stage after just a song and a half at a Houston concert in May. The remaining musicians continued on with audience members performing karaoke-style before the gig was eventually canceled.

Monday’s concert featured a career-spanning setlist. Bright Eyes played four songs of their latest album, 2020’s Down In The Weeds, Where The World Once Was. The evening also included four cuts a piece off I’m Wide Awake, It’s Morning and 2011’s The People’s Key in addition to material from four other releases. Oberst took the mic back for “I Believe In Symmetry” and “One For You, One For Me” to close the show.

Bright Eyes conclude the European/UK portion of their 2022 World Tour tonight in Glasgow. Oberst & Co. then start another North American leg on October 19 in Sonoma, California.
