Bruce Springsteen will turn to the history of classic soul music for his next album, a collection of covers titled Only The Strong Survive due out on November 11th via Columbia Records. The Boss previewed his 21st studio album with a take on Frank Wilson‘s “Do I Love You (Indeed I Do)”.
On Only The Strong Survive, Springsteen looks back to the heyday of Stax, Motown, Gamble and Huff, and more with songs from the 1960s and ’70s. He recorded his follow-up to 2020’s Letter To You at his Thrill Hill Recording studio in New Jersey with producer Ron Aniello.
The 15-song collection features contributions from The E Street Horns and backing vocalists Soozie Tyrell, Lisa Lowell, Michelle Moore, Curtis King Jr., Dennis Collins, and Fonzi Thornton. Springsteen also recruited legendary vocalist Sam Moore (Sam & Dave) to lend his voice to Dobie Gray‘s “Soul Days” and William Bell‘s “I Forgot To Be Your Lover”.
“I wanted to make an album where I just sang. And what better music to work with than the great American songbook of the Sixties and Seventies?” Springsteen said. “I’ve taken my inspiration from Levi Stubbs, David Ruffin, Jimmy Ruffin, the Iceman Jerry Butler, Diana Ross, Dobie Gray, and Scott Walker, among many others. I’ve tried to do justice to them all—and to the fabulous writers of this glorious music. My goal is for the modern audience to experience its beauty and joy, just as I have since I first heard it. I hope you love listening to it as much as I loved making it.”
