Dark Star Orchestra kicked off a trek through Europe celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Grateful Dead’s legendary Europe ’72 Tour on Tuesday night in London. The tribute act utilized the same setlist last night at Shepherd’s Bush Empire as the Dead did to complete their journey through the continent on May 26, 1972 at London’s Lyceum Theatre.

DSO’s trek consists of nine shows with the band expected to recreate GD setlists played during their Europe ’72 Tour at each stop. Last night marked Dark Star Orchestra’s first performance in London since March 18, 2012. The gig a decade back at The Garage saw the group present the Dead’s setlist from May 23, 1972. The Lyceum hosted a four-night stand May 23-26, 1972 to bring the excursion immortalized on the legendary GD live album Europe ’72 to a close.

Tuesday’s concert saw a Dark Star Orchestra lineup consisting of guitarists Jeff Mattson and Rob Eaton, keyboardist Rob Barraco, bassist Skip Vangelas, vocalist Lisa Mackey and drummer Rob Koritz. Mattson played Jerry Garcia’s iconic Alligator guitar on loan from Grateful Guitar Foundation’s Andy Logan throughout the night. Mackey took the stage at various points of the concert to fill the Donna Jean Godchaux role. Lisa also showed off her harmonica skills on Pigpen numbers.

Josh Cohen of Workingman’s Dyes created a series of tie dye panels that covered the amps on stage last night. The panels will continue to be used throughout the run. Additionally, the band performed in front of a backdrop heralding the celebratory tour featuring artwork from DSO’s promotional materials for the excursion.

The tour continues in Paris on Saturday at L’Olympia, the same venue the Grateful Dead played on May 3, 1972.
