Dave Matthews Band ended their annual Labor Day Weekend run with a concert at The Gorge on Sunday. The septet busted out beloved instrumental “#34” to start a three-song encore that saw visuals provided by a drone light show in the skies above the famed Washington state venue.
“#34” appears on DMB’s debut studio album, 1994’s Under The Table And Dreaming. The song was played frequently in 1993 and then was shelved until a series of performances in 2005. DMB dusted off “34” for two plays in 2013 and again on September 7, 2018. Both most recent versions before last night took place on late saxophonist LeRoi Moore’s birthday. The instrumental was liberated at The Gorge on Sunday after a span of 275 shows.
A drone light show displayed beautiful patterns and shapes throughout last night’s “#34.” Dave Matthews Band then lit into “So Right” off 2001’s Everyday as the drones formed the group’s fire dancer icon and the image of LeRoi Moore featured on the cover of 2009’s Big Whiskey & the GrooGrux King. The septet finished “So Right” while the drones departed the scene. One of the most memorable encores in DMB history ended with the third “What You Are” of 2022.

Dave Matthews Band focused on old school material throughout their 19-song main set on Sunday at The Gorge. “Proudest Monkey” opened as one of three songs from 1995’s Crash to make last night’s setlist along with “Lie In Our Graves” and “Drive In, Drive Out.” Sunday’s “Proudest Monkey” was just the second time the song opened a DMB show since 2012. Next came “Satellite” which along with “#34,” “Lover Lay Down,” “Jimi Thing,” “Typical Situation,” “Dancing Nancies” and “Ants Marching” represented Under The Table And Dreaming.
The seven-piece didn’t solely focus on oldies as “Walk Around The Moon” made its Gorge debut a little over a year after the original was first played. DMB had one cover in store for their final show of 2022 at the venue with The Isley Brothers’ “It’s Your Thing” seeing action for its first performance since initially premiered by the septet in New Hampshire on July 12, 2022. Additionally, crew member Joe Lawlor sat-in on guitar for “Corn Bread” towards the end of the frame.
It’s now off to the Denver area for DMB, who will play shows at Fiddler’s Green on Friday and Saturday. See the group’s full schedule below.
