Jennifer Hartswick Band, Neighbor 9 & Duochrome Kick Off Into The Sun 2022: Setlists & Pro-Shot Video

63

Into The Sun 2022 began on Friday at Soundcheck Studios in Pembroke, Massachusetts with performances from the Jennifer Hartswick Band, Neighbor and Duochrome. Jennifer Hartswick Band’s headlining set saw the group joined by members of Duochrome, while Neighbor presented a Neighbor 9 set featuring horns and backing vocalists as part of the first night of the three-night mini-festival.

Duochrome kicked off the festivities with a set that spanned nearly an hour. The six-piece band was formed during the pandemic with Friday just their third gig ever. The Boston-based outfit recently released their debut album, Sky View. Duochrome played five of the six songs featured on Sky View starting with “Good Time” and ending with its title track.

Neighbor 9 took the stage shortly after 8:30 p.m. Keyboardist Richard James addressed the recent loss of Neighbor fan Steve Shaw at the start of the set. Ricky was wearing Steve’s Neighbor jersey and dedicated the 90-minute performance to Shaw. James, bassist Dan Kelly, drummer Dean Johnston and guitarist Lyle Brewer were joined by saxophonist Matt Wayne, trombonist Rob Krahn and trumpeter James Cronin as well as vocalists Joanne Cassidy and Renee Dupuis for the bulk of the third Neighbor 9 set in the band’s history.

The nine-piece lineup opened with “Steel” and then tore through “Thunder Island” before offering the first Neighbor 9 versions of “Longest Day,” “Why I Like You” and “Terror For Free.” Next, “Take Me Alive” gave way to The Band’s version of “Don’t Do It.” Then, the ensemble paired “Isla” and “Crashing Down.” The “Magic Marble Crew” and “Don’t You Cry” that closed the set were linked with a “Drums” segment.

Jennifer Hartswick headlined with the Jennifer Hartswick Band on the day her new album, Something In The Water, came out. The trumpeter and vocalist was backed by guitarist Nick Cassarino, drummer Conor Elmes and bassist Dezron Douglas. Last night’s JHB set began with covers of Rufus’ “You Got The Love” and The Crusaders’ “Soul Shadows.” Duochrome trombonist Brian Thomas and saxophonist Jared Simms then emerged for debut performances of Something In The Water cuts “By The River” and “Only Time Will Tell.”

Thomas and Simms vacated the stage for the Jennifer Hartswick Band’s take on “Numb” from the trumpeter/vocalist’s 2018 solo effort, Nexus. Brian and Jared returned to help on a cover of Gap Band’s “Shake” and stuck around for Something In The Water standouts “For You” and “Two Way Mirror.” Hartswick then led the core band through a powerful cover of the Janis Joplin-popularized “Piece Of My Heart.” Jennifer then looked again to Nexus for “You Can’t Take It Back” before closing the set and evening with her take on Bonnie Raitt’s “Tangled & Dark.”

Props to LD Vin Pugliese for his excellent work all night. Stay tuned for a full report on Into The Sun 2022 from Scott Marks early next week. Watch pro-shot video of last night’s show via Soundcheck Studios’ Facebook page below:
