Mac McCaughan Releases New EP ‘The Sound Of Yourself (Acoustic Versions)’

39

Mac McCaughan (Superchunk/Portastatic) dropped The Sound Of Yourself (Acoustic Versions) today on his own Merge Records. The EP contains stripped-down versions of songs off McCaughan’s 2021 LP, The Sound Of Yourself.

The arrival of The Sound Of Yourself (Acoustic Versions) marks the one year anniversary of the EP’s full-length predecessor. Although the EP’s six tracks — recorded in August 2022 — feature a lone McCaughan, The Sound Of Yourself (Acoustic Versions) does contain a fresh guest appearance, as Mac explained.

“When I toured for the album, I had to learn how to play these songs on guitar when for the most part they had been written on bass or keyboards, so these are kind of the versions of these songs I’d be playing if I were doing a solo acoustic show (except ‘Dawn Bends (Piano)’—I cannot play the piano to save my life). There are just a couple embellishments, and the only guest is Matt Douglas on ‘Sleep Donor (Acoustic)’ playing sax as he did on this song during the tour.”
