Neighbor, The Nth Power, Jennifer Hartswick & Nick Cassarino Continue Into The Sun

97

On Saturday, Neighbor headlined the second night of Into The Sun 2022 at Soundcheck Studios in Pembroke, Massachusetts. Night two also saw performances by Jennifer Hartswick & Nick Cassarino and The Nth Power.

JHa (trumpet/vocals) and Cassarino (guitar/vocals) kicked off the evening with a set that mixed some of Hartswick’s originals with a selection of choice covers, such as John Prine’s Angel From Montgomery, Radiohead’s “Creep,” Paul Simon’s “Under African Skies” and Cassarino singing lead on a slowed-down, falsetto delivered “Your Love” by The Outfield.

The Nth Power, which features Cassarino, drummer Nikki Glaspie and bassist Nate Edgar were joined by Hartswick for the latter part of their performance. Hartswick has regularly accompanied The Nth Power over the years and added to her long history of collaborating with the trio on Saturday night.

Neighbor kicked off their headlining set with a fitting performance of “Into The Sun.” Next came guitarist Lyle Brewer and keyboardist Ricky James delivering “Nature Vs. Nurture,” which was last played on Halloween 2021 by the Neighbor 9 expanded lineup that performed at Into The Sun on Friday.

Bassist Dan Kellyand drummer Dean Johnston were brought back into the fold as the full band segued into “Sail On.” The set progressed with the foursome working through “Hot Air Balloon,” before stringing together “The Unknown” a drums segment, and “One For The Hoop.”

Neighbor incorporated elements of “Into The Sun” and “Negative Space” within “One For The Hoop.” Next came, “Sleep When You’re Dead” and “Point of No Return.”

The band then broke out “Bucket Full of Laughter” for its second performance, having played it once prior at Soundcheck Studios in April 2021. Neighbor then launched into “Planet Silver,” which featured a “Happy Birthday” tease and had its lyrics changed in recognition of Tim Rusteika’s birthday.

A coupling of “Yo Yo Ma” into “Cucamonga Carl” set up the final song of the band’s set. The lone cover of Neighbor’s performance was their closing take on Tom Waits’ “Ol’ 55.”

Into The Sun 2022 wraps tonight with Neighbor, Club d’Elf and Natalie Cressman & Ian Faquini. Purchase tickets through IntoTheSun2022.com or at the door.
