Pearl Jam Brings Out Chad Smith At Madison Square Garden

Pearl Jam continued their latest North American tour with a concert at Madison Square Garden in New York City on Sunday night. Red Hot Chili Peppers drummer Chad Smith joined the band on a cover of Neil Young’s “Rockin’ In The Free World” that was followed by guitarist Mike McCready performing an instrumental “The Star Spangled Banner” to end a show played on the 21st anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks.

Frontman Eddie Vedder noted the occasion early in the evening after Pearl Jam opened with “Release” and “Garden.” Vedder told the crowd it was an honor to play New York City on 9/11 and told the crowd a number of first responders were in attendance. He also welcomed fans to the show and explained how happy Pearl Jam was to be back at MSG for the first time since 2016. Eddie added it was the 37th time the group has played the Big Apple. An emotional “Come Back” followed.

Pearl Jam wound up performing an 18-song main set. The Seattle-based band played plenty of classics including “Porch,” “Dissident,” “Even Flow” and “Better Man.” Vedder then sang a lyric from Elton John’s “Tiny Dancer” as a lead-in to the Mother Love Bone suite “Chloe Dancer”/”Crown On Thorns.” The former had been shelved since May 1, 2016, while the latter last saw action on August 10, 2018. Next came a take on Dead Boys’ “Sonic Reducer” which was also previously played on August 10, 2018. “Rearviewmirror” closed the frame.

When the band returned for the encore, Eddie explained Pearl Jam played an extra show in Canada to pay the fine for going over the curfew at MSG. He then led a performance of “Elderly Woman Behind The Counter In A Small Town” played to fans at the back at the arena. “Why Go” and “Do The Evolution” came next and prefaced a rendition of Prince’s “Purple Rain” sung by Vedder and Josh Klinghoffer. After “Alive,” Chad Smith emerged and took over Klinghoffer’s percussion kit for “Rockin’ In The Free World” before McCready’s emotional “Star Spangled Banner” finale.
