Phish Plays 1 ‘Long-Ass Set’ At DICK’S: Setlist, Recap & The Skinny

34

A rain storm forced Phish to delay the start of their concert Friday night at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park in Commerce City, Colorado. The bad weather triggered a partial evacuation of the venue and the band ended up beginning the show around the time they would have typically started the second set.

When the torrential downpour stopped, crew members quickly prepared the stage and fans returned to their seats and tarps. As has happened in the past, as recently as the August 4 show at Pine Knob, the postponed start left time for only “one long-ass set,” which fittingly had the feel of a second set from the get-go.

After the delay, the concert finally started at 10:01 p.m. and “Carini” helped release the pent-up tension caused by the wait. As Phish.net noted, after guitarist Trey Anastasio sang the “saw you with that naked dude” verse, the “lyrics were changed to ‘at least he had some boots’ in reference to [a] streaker who ran out onto the field during the weather delay wearing only a pair of boots.” Trey steered the bright and expressive jam that grew out of the opener, setting a tone for the remainder of the set.

The end of the condensed jam led to the start of “You Enjoy Myself.” After the “YEM” trampoline section, bassist Mike Gordon introduced a groove that Trey quickly picked up and the two began mimicking each other. Keyboardist Page McConnell added shading with his Wurlitzer while Trey reinterpreted and expanded the groove, pushing toward a big, rocking jam. A second jam after the “YEM” vocal jam deserved a big “YES” for the band continuing the trend seen a few times this year.

The brief dose of added improvisation set up a masterful segue into “Ghost.” During its intro, drummer Jon Fishman triggered underwater bubbling sounds from his sample pad. Fish went on to anchor an outstanding “Ghost” jam, the kind of improvisation that hits a sweet spot where the four musicians progress like a single entity, totally in sync with each other, sounding almost as if the music was playing them. The sweet jam was followed by a visit from “Julius,” as the lively rocker worked its way into the mix.

“Reba” was next to appear on the setlist and was garnished with a thematic sequence following the well-executed opening section. Trey then called up “Tube” and at this point, it seemed like the guitarist had been storing up riffs during the rain delay and was now finally getting to let them out. That sentiment continued with the subsequent “Tweezer.” Trey and Page playfully engaged in a back-and-forth exchange, the latter working the piano with his right hand and the Clavinet with his left.

Trey established a melody with an instant familiarity, landing on a form that resembled elements of “Destiny Unbound,” and slipping in a “Streets Of Cairo” lick. The guitarist guided a segment that sounded as if it was pre-composed, like they were about to segue into a different song. Instead, they shifted to another improvised passage that cascaded out to a signature, satisfying peak.

The band had now rolled past 11:25 p.m., which was the time they ended Thursday’s show. “What’s The Use” came next, with Lighting Director Chris Kuroda darkening the soccer stadium during the atmospheric instrumental.

The band then unexpectedly launched into “Weekapaug Groove,” having not previously played “Mike’s Song.” The groove in “Weekapaug Groove” soon morphed into the rhythmic pattern of “No Men In Man’s Land” as if was naturally part of the same song. The speedy delivery of “NMINML” energetically led back into “Weekapaug” further evidencing the two songs’ similar DNA.

David Bowie’s “Moonage Daydream,” the evening’s lone cover, made its second appearance of the summer. The last song of the “long-ass set” was a straight-ahead offering of “Chalk Dust Torture,” which came to an end at 11:59 p.m.

“Pebbles And Marbles” initiated the encore as Friday became Saturday. The song had only landed in the encore slot once prior. The always energetic coda, “Tweezer Reprise,” capped the show, which ended at 12:14 a.m.

Phish plays another concert tonight at Dick’s. There is no rain in the forecast. Livestreams are available via LivePhish.com and an audio simulcast can be listened to via SiriusXM Phish Radio.
