Showtime will examine the rise and fall of famed record producer and convicted murderer Phil Spector as well as his victim Lana Clarkson in a new documentary. Spector, a four-part series, will premiere on-demand on November 4th.
The series, which Showtime is producing with British premium network Sky, will trace the “Wall of Sound” producer’s history of erratic behavior which culminated on February 3rd, 2003 when Spector shot and killed the 23-year-old actress he met just that night. While Spector gives plenty of airtime to its namesake—with stories about Phil pulling a gun on Leonard Cohen and terrorizing his house guests by locking them in and cutting the lights—it also makes sure to spotlight the woman who was more than just his victim.
Through interviews with family and friends, Spector traces Clarkson’s tragic path toward Phil, with her mother remarking “his troubles came into contact with my daughter.” The project also chronicles the ensuing trial and media circus, where Spector was sentenced to 19 years to life for Clarkson’s murder, a sentence he died serving last year.
Spector was directed by Sheena M. Joyce and Don Argott, who both co-directed Framing John Delorean and the upcoming Ronnie James Dio documentary, Dio: Dreamers Never Die. Executive producers for the project include Simon Chinn (Searching For Sugar Man), Jonathon Chinn (Tina), and James Marsh (Man on Wire, Troubleman – The Last Years of Marvin Gaye). The score was composed by Dan Reynolds and Daniel Wayne Sermon (Imagine Dragons) along with Aja Volkman (Nico Vega).
