Stevie Nicks Covers Buffalo Springfield’s ‘For What It’s Worth’

Stevie Nicks recently released a cover of Buffalo Springfield’s 1966 single “For What It’s Worth.” Nicks debuted her take on the protest song penned by Stephen Stills live earlier this month.

Stills wrote “For What It’s Worth” in the aftermath of the November 1966 Sunset Strip curfew riots in Los Angeles. The anti-war song was issued as a single the next month and was included on the March 1967 second pressing of Buffalo Springfield’s self-titled debut studio album.

Produced by Greg Kurstin, Stevie Nicks recorded her rendition of “For What It’s Worth” earlier this year in Los Angeles. The longtime Fleetwood Mac member is joined on the track by guitarist Waddy Wachtel and backing vocalist Sharon Celani. Additionally, Kurstin played multiple instruments on the cover including drums, organ and guitar. The single is the first new music from Nicks since she put out the single “Show Them The Way” in 2020.

“I’m so excited to release my new song this Friday,” wrote Nicks last week in announcing the cover on social media. “It’s called ‘For What It’s Worth’ and it was written by Stephen Stills in 1966. It meant something to me then, and it means something to me now. I always wanted to interpret it through the eyes of a woman — and it seems like today, in the times that we live in — that it has a lot to say…”
