The Greyboy Allstars To Kick Off 30th-Anniversary Celebration With New Year’s Eve Run Ft. DJ Greyboy

The Greyboy Allstars have announced plans to celebrate New Year’s Eve with a three-night run at The Casbah in the band’s hometown of San Diego, CA on December 29th, 30th, and 31st. The soul-groove quintet will welcome its namesake, turntablist DJ Greyboy, who helped form the group in 1993 with saxophonist Karl Denson, and the shows will kick off a year-long celebration of the band’s 30th anniversary, dubbed GBA30.

Tickets for The Greyboy Allstars New Year’s Eve run go on sale this Friday, September 23rd at 10 a.m. PT via the band’s website, and additional “plans are underway for a number of events throughout next year to mark this milestone,” the band said in a press release.

The Greyboy Allstars initially joined forces after rare groove luminary DJ Greyboy and Denson, who was touring with Lenny Kravitz at the time, collaborated on two songs for a Ubiquity Records compilation called Home Cookin’. DJ Greyboy then enlisted Denson to contribute to his 1994 solo album Freestylin’, after which they formed their own label, Greyboy Records, and recruited a stacked lineup of instrumentalists to form The Greyboy Allstars. The band’s founding lineup featured guitarist Mike Andrews (under the pseudonym Elgin Park), keyboardist Robert Walter, bassist Chris Stillwell, and drummer Zak Najor, who later left the group and was replaced by current GBA drummer and San Diego native Aaron Redfield after stints with Eric Kalb and Alan Evans (Soulive).

Earlier this year The Greyboy Allstars reissued their landmark studio album, 1997’s A Town Called Earth, on streaming outlets and limited edition 2LP 180-gram, color vinyl in celebration of the album’s 25th anniversary. They also released their first covers album, Get a Job: Music From The Original Broadcast Series Soul Dream, featuring ten songs by artists including Gil Scott-Heron, The Beatles, and Burt Bacharach. The recording was captured live in the studio during the band’s 2021 “Soul Dream” livestream series on nugs.net, and they supported the release with a cross-country U.S. tour.

Currently, The Greyboy Allstars keyboardist Robert Walter is performing with Roger Waters on his This Is Not A Drill tour, and saxophonist Karl Denson is a touring member of The Rolling Stones.
