While guitarist Trey Anastasio has performed “Bug” with various projects over the past few years including Phish, the Trey Anastasio Trio and with seven-year-old fan Jovi Crusen, the song hadn’t been performed by the Trey Anastasio Band since 2008. That changed last night when TAB played “Bug” during their concert at Edgefield in Troutdale, Oregon.
“Bug” was actually debuted by TAB as part of the Phish guitarist’s first solo tour in 1999. The versions from Anastasio, drummer Russ Lawton and bassist Tony Markellis on May 8, 1999 in Madison, Wisconsin on May 8, 1999 and in Asheville, North Carolina on May 10, 1999 were followed by the Phish premiere on June 30, 1999 in Bonner Springs, Kansas. Phish played “Bug” 85 more times through this month’s Dick’s run and a studio version was featured on the quartet’s 2000 album, Farmhouse.
TAB’s history with “Bug” has been more sparse. A version that saw Page McConnell replace keyboardist Ray Paczkowski came on May 31, 2002 in Las Vegas. Anastasio then offered solo acoustic renditions at two TAB shows in the fall of 2005 before a pair of performances in 2008 by the Classic TAB lineup. Two more solo takes followed in February 2011 along with four versions from what was billed as the Trey Anastasio Trio in 2018.
Sunday’s version of “Bug” was played sans horns. However, trumpeter Jennifer Hartswick and trombonist Natalie Cressman remained on stage to provide harmony vocals. Watch how it went below:
Earlier in the night, the Trey Anastasio Band worked instrumental “Olivia” into “Gotta Jibboo” to kick off the concert. Anastasio, Lawton, Paczkowski, Hartswick, Cressman, percussionist Cyro Baptista, saxophonist James Casey and bassist Dezron Douglas continued on with the now usual combination of solo gems such as “Pigtail,” “Drifting” and “Valentine” and Phish classics including “46 Days,” “No Men In No Man’s Land” and “Valentine” over the remainder of the first set in Troutdale.
TAB launched the second set with a 10-minute “Sand” featuring a swampy solo from Anastasio. Next came oldie “Burlap Sack And Pumps” propelled by Douglas that included a stellar James Casey sax solo. Trey then pulled “Hey Stranger” from his 2022 album, Mercy, for its third appearance at a TAB show. “The Moma Dance” was followed by tour debuts of “Last Tube,” “About To Run,” “Night Speaks To A Woman” and the “Bug” bust out.
The eight-piece lit into “Tuesday” after “Bug” and closed the second set by pairing “A Life Beyond The Dream” and “Ghost.” Last night’s show concluded with the group’s first “Everything’s Right” encore since 2017. The Trey Anastasio Band’s Fall Tour 2022 resumes on Tuesday in Garden City, Idaho.

Last Tube began as First Tube. Bug was performed by the Trey Anastasio Band with a full lineup (minus James) for the first time since May 31, 2002 (it had been played by TAB as “Classic TAB” with Trey, Russ Lawton, Tony Markellis, and Ray Paczkowski in 2008 and by the Trey Anastasio Trio in 2018).
