Phish guitarist Trey Anastasio offered the live debut of “6 And One Half Minutes” to start the encore of Friday’s Trey Anastasio Band concert in Bonner, Montana. Anastasio went acoustic for the premiere, which featured backing vocals from TAB members Jennifer Hartswick, Natalie Cressman and James Casey and came as part of the group’s fall tour opener.
“6 And One Half Minutes” was originally released by Anastasio earlier this year on his Mercy album. The nine-track LP marked Trey’s debut solo acoustic release. The Phish guitarist emerged for the encore at Kettlehouse Amphitheater with acoustic in hand and discussed his appreciation for the picturesque venue. He told the story of witnessing “fast fishing” on the Blackfoot River.
Anastasio then introduced Hartswick, Cressman and Casey — who went sans horns for the start of the encore. The “TAB Sibs” provided harmony vocals on Trey’s first live performance of “6 And One Half Minutes.”

The debut followed a pair of TAB sets featuring a career-spanning mix of both solo and Phish material. Anastasio, Hartswick, Cressman, Casey, percussionist Cyro Baptista, drummer Russ Lawton, keyboardist Ray Paczkowski and bassist Dezron Douglas kicked off the night and Trey’s first performance at Kettlehouse Amphitheater with “Set Your Soul Free.” The reggae-tinged “Love Is What We Are” came next along with classic instrumental “Mozambique.” A nicely extended “Everything’s Right” then gave way to “Push On ‘Til The Day” before Anastasio looked to the Phish repertoire for “Ghost” and “Magilla.”
Friday’s first set continued with “Pigtail” off 2012’s Traveler and “Drifting” from Anastasio’s self-titled 2002 studio album. Paczkowski and Hartswick then shined on the ensuing “Curlew’s Call” and TAB closed the frame with a “Gotta Jibboo” featuring a ferocious guitar solo from Trey.
“Alive Again” got the second set underway in Bonner, Montana. TAB then showed off their arrangement of the Phish classic “The Moma Dance” ahead of a sequence connecting “Alaska,” “Olivia” and “No Men In No Man’s Land.” Staple “Cayman Review” followed along with the title track of Mercy. From there, the eight-piece went back to Traveler for “Valentine” and capped the set with a “Sand” filled with fretboard fireworks.
After “6 And One Half Minutes,” Anastasio kept the unplugged format for “Brief Time.” Jennifer, Natalie and James sang along on the song from Trey’s Ghosts Of The Forest suite. The rest of the band then came back out as Trey swapped acoustic for electric to keep the encore going with “A Life Beyond The Dream.” Anastasio and company chose “Tuesday” to end the four-song encore and tour opener in Bonner, Montana.
TAB continued the tour with concerts at Marymoor Park in Redmond, Washington on Saturday and Edgefield in Troutdale, Oregon on Sunday. Anastasio brings the ensemble to Revolution Concert House & Event Center in Garden City, Idaho tomorrow.
