Umphrey’s McGee Debuts ‘Hiccup’ At KettleHouse Amphitheater

56

Umphrey’s McGee continues to add songs from their recently released studio album Asking For A Friend into their live repertoire. Saturday’s concert at the KettleHouse Amphitheater in Bonner, Montana included the debut performance of “Hiccup.”

With Friday’s debut of “It’s Not Your Fault” at UM’s show in Bozeman, 11 of the 14 songs on Asking From A Friend have made it to the live stage. Saturday’s first set kicked off with the Asking tracks “Small Strides” and “Fenced In.” The latter song segued into “Speak Up” and led to a lengthy jam. The elaborate instrumental “Miss Tinkle’s Overture” came next, followed by guitarist Jake Cinninger leading the band through “Bad Poker.”

“Ladies and gentlemen, my friend [keyboardist] Joel [Cummins] here wants me to tell you all we’re about to play a song we’ve never played before,” guitarist Brendan Bayliss said before the “Hiccup” debut. “So we hope you enjoy it, immensely.”

After the debut, the first set ended with a pairing of “Kabump” with “Wife Soup.” The two songs together collectively spanned over 24 minutes.

The start of the second set was greeted with another expansive improvisation that developed out of “Bridgeless,” which dialed up another +20-minute jam. Uplifting instrumental “Glory” trailed the elongated opener. Next on the setlist was “The Silent Type” setting up “Plunger” segueing into “2nd Self.” Set two was capped with the funk rocker “Wappy Sprayberry.”

UM’s encore consisted of “In The Kitchen.” The finale included a quote of Mötley Crüe’s “Dr. Feelgood.” Umphrey’s McGee’s next show takes place on September 29 in Virginia. Listen to an audience recording of Saturday’s concert at the KettleHouse Amphitheater taped by Mark Smith:
