Ween Delivers ‘The Stallion’ Suite + Busts Out ‘Cover It With Gas & Set It On Fire’ In Atlanta

Ween brought the Boognish to The Eastern in Atlanta for a two-night stand over the weekend. Friday saw a complete rendering of “The Stallion” suite while Saturday boasted a bust out of “Cover It With Gas And Set It On Fire.”

Guitarists Aaron “Gene Ween” Freeman and Mickey “Dean Ween” Melchiondo, bassist Dave Dreiwitz, keyboardist Glenn McClelland and drummer Claude Coleman Jr. kicked off Friday night with “She Wanted To Leave” followed by a pair of songs from 1990’s The Pod, “Pork Roll Egg And Cheese” and “Captain Fantasy.” Next, the band kept things fantastic with “Don’t Get 2 Close (2 My Fantasy)” ahead of “Object.” Staples “The Grobe,” “Buckingham Green,” “Bananas and Blow,” and “Learnin’ to Love” followed before Deaner led the band through “With My Own Bare Hands” and sang with Gener on “She Fucks Me.”

Ween then bopped through “Big Jilm” and “Even If You Don’t” ahead of the historically rare “Mononucleosis” and the band’s sole cover of the run, Instant Death’s “The Enabler.” The band then slipped in “What Deaner Was Taklin’ About” ahead of “Waving My Dick In The Wind,” “Fat Lenny,” “Did You See Me” and “Flutes Of Chi.” A pair of songs from 2003’s Quebec, “Tried And True” and “I Don’t Want It,” followed ahead of “The Argus.”

Ween then delivered all five parts of “The Stallion” suite. The band performed the complete epic for the first time on November 17, 2017 in Austin, Texas. They performed it again on July 25, 2018 for their encore in Columbus, Ohio. “The Stallion’s” five parts are spread out across three different studio records with the first two installments appearing on 1991’s The Pod. “The Stallion pt 2” is the second rarest with 11 plays since 2003. “Pt 3”, appearing on 1992’s Pure Guava, is a staple with 354 plays. “Pt 4” does not appear on a studio album and is the rarest with just seven plays since 2002. “Pt 5” appears on the 9-track 1999 effort Craters Of The Sac and has seen pretty good action at 70 plays. Ween wrapped up the main set with “Ocean Man,” “I’ll Be Your Jonny on the Spot” and “Homo Rainbow.” The band would come back out for a four-song encore of “Fiesta”, “Nan,” “Mister Would You Please Help My Pony?” and “I’m Holding You.”

Saturday got underway with White Pepper’s “Exactly Where I’m At” followed by a double dose of 12 Golden Country Greats with “Piss Up A Rope” and “Japanese Cowboy” spilt by The Mollusk’s “Polka Dot Tail.” Next up came a solid run of “Take Me Away,” “Gabrielle,” “The Goin’ Gets Tough From the Getgo,” “Beacon Light,” “Happy Colored Marbles,” and “The HIV Song” before Deaner helmed the band’s tribute to Parliament-Funkadelic guitarist Eddie Hazel with “A Tear For Eddie.”

A trio of favorites in “Roses Are Free,” “Stay Forever” and “Your Party” followed ahead of “Laura,” “Dr. Rock” and “Pumpin’ 4 The Man.” After the recently revived rarity “Boing,” Ween dusted off “Cover It With Gas And Set It On Fire.” The band last played the unreleased song on November 2, 2018 in Milwaukee for a total gap of 50 shows, as per Brownbase.

“Awesome Sound” and “Demon Sweat” came next ahead of the relatively new tune “Cornbread Red.” Ween continued with “The Mollusk” and “Never Squeal” ahead of a pairng of “Licking the Palm For Guava” and “Mushroom Festival in Hell.” Another rarity, “Wayne’s Pet Youngin,” followed before the band capped the set with “You Fucked Up, “Vallejo” and “Someday.” Ween retunred to encore with “I’m Dancing in the Show Tonight,” “Puerto Rican Power,” “Touch My Tooter” and “Drifter in the Dark” to seal the 36-song concert and ATL run.
