Billy Strings Talks Complicated Upbringing & Defying Odds In ‘Sunday Morning’ Profile

Guitarist Billy Strings was featured in a profile that aired on yesterday’s episode of CBS Sunday Morning. Strings spoke about his rise to fame with Sunday Morning contributor Conor Knighton in the five-minute segment.

The 30-year-old musician born William Apostol famously envisioned his future career as a kindergarten student. Strings showed off an assignment where he filled out “blue grass player” after “When I grow up I want to be a.” Apostol was taught to play guitar and sing while growing up in central Michigan by his father Terry Barber.

Billy noted his parents became addicted to meth and the party atmosphere turned dark, so he moved out of the house as a 13-year-old. Strings added his folks have been sober for over a decade. “I talk about this stuff sometimes and I worry that it will make my parents look back or something, but it’s really a success story,” Strings proclaimed.

“I learned how to play music by playing bluegrass around a fire with my dad and stuff, but I learned how to perform in a metal band,” Strings recalled of his brief stint in a metal band while in high school. While traditional bluegrass musicians are typically stoic, Billy can’t hide his enthusiasm while on stage. The profile also dove into Strings’ love of fishing, whether jam band is a good description of his music and the album he’s making with his father — ME/AND/DAD.
