Bob Weir & Wolf Bros Debut ‘Salt Lake City’ & ‘Dark Hollow’ In New Haven

39

Bob Weir and Wolf Bros offered the project’s premiere performances of Bob Weir original “Salt Lake City” and the traditional “Dark Hollow” during their concert on Saturday. The show took place at Westville Music Bowl in New Haven, Connectiut.

Weir, bassist Don Was, drummer Jay Lane, pedal steel guitarist Barry Sless and keyboardist Jeff Chimenti are on the road with The Wolfpack string and horn section of Alex Kelly, Brian Switzer, Adam Theis, Mads Tolling and Sheldon Brown. The ensemble’s fall tour began on Friday at the Palace Theatre in Waterbury, Connecticut.

The Wolfpack accompanies the core band for large portions of each concert. The full collective started Saturday’s concert in New Haven with a “Shakedown Street” that bled into “New Speedway Boogie.” Next up was the Wolf Bros’ “Salt Lake City” debut. Bobby hadn’t played the song featured on his 1978 album Heaven Help The Fool since a RatDog concert on July 10, 2014.

Weir, Was, Lane, Sless and Chimenti continued on sans Wolf Pack with the Bob McDill/Allen Reynolds co-write “Catfish John” and a cover of Marty Robbins’ “El Paso.” The strings and horns returned in time for “Mexicali Blues” and also added to the set-closing pairing of “He’s Gone” and “Cassidy.”

Saturday’s second set got underway with the group’s first “Dark Hollow.” Originally recorded by Bill Browning, the song was played approximately 30 times by the Grateful Dead as part of acoustic sets in 1970 and 1980. Additionally, the Grateful Dead performed “Dark Hollow” electric twice in 1971. The Wolf Bros’ debut last saw action from Weir with The Campfire Band on April 19, 2017.

Bobby brought back The Wolfpack for “Two Djinn” from the RatDog songbook. The strings and horns stuck around for a lengthy segment that saw the group work “Truckin’” into the “Weather Report Suite” complete with “Let It Grow.” From there, the full ensemble treated fans to the beloved “China Cat Sunflower”/”I Know You Rider” suite. While The Wolfpack vacated the stage for a cover of The Beatles’ “Dear Prudence,” they came back to help conclude Saturday’s second set with the day-appropriate “One More Saturday Night.”

“Ripple” was the choice to start the encore at Westville Music Bowl. Weir, Wolf Bros and The Wolfpack then capped the night with “Playing In The Band Reprise” following the “Playin’” that opened the previous night in Waterbury. The tour moves on Washington D.C.’s Kennedy Center on Wednesday for the first of four shows with the National Symphony Orchestra.
