Gov’t Mule & Mike Campbell Have A ‘Breakdown’ In Tallahassee

Gov’t Mule continued a run of shows with support from Mike Campbell & The Dirty Knobs with a concert in Tallahassee, Florida on Saturday night. Once again Campbell, the former Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers/current Fleetwood Mac guitarist, came out to assist Mule on a pair of covers.

Campbell, who also joined Gov’t Mule on back-to-back covers in Athens, Georgia on Friday night, emerged midway through the band’s main set at Tallahassee’s Capital City Amphitheater at Cascades Park. Up first was The Paul Butterfield Blues Band’s “Born in Chicago.” Saturday’s performance of the song written by Nick Gravenites was the first by Mule. Campbell’s guest spot kept going with “Breakdown,” the classic hit song that was the lead single off Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers’ 1976 self-titled debut album.

Prior to Campbell’s sit-in, guitarist Warren Haynes, drummer Matt Abts, bassist Jorgen Carlsson and muti-instrumentalist Danny Louis launched their main set with the original “Stone Cold Rage.” Sticking with originals, “Revolution Come, Revolution Go,” “Whisper In Your Soul,” “Fool’s Moon,” “Birth Of The Mule” and “Thorns Of Life” preceded the guest spot.

After Campbell’s appearance, Mule picked up with a sequence stringing together “Trane,” Link Wray’s “Rumble,” James Brown’s “Sex Machine” and a jam on the Grateful Dead’s “St. Stephen.” The band pulled out “Mule” for the set closer, infusing it with “Who Do You Love?” by Bo Diddley. For the encore, the night came to an end with Haynes’ beautifully sentimental “Soulshine.”

Gov’t Mule’s tour with Mike Campbell & The Dirty Knobs resumes tomorrow, Tuesday, October 10 in Durham, North Carolina. View photos and the setlist from Saturday below:
