John Prine’s Birthday Celebrated At The Ryman With Bob Weir, Bonnie Raitt, Jason Isbell & More

44

The life and music of John Prine were celebrated on what would have been the beloved singer-songwriter’s birthday Monday with another “You Got Gold” concert. The event held at The Ryman Auditorium in Nashville featured an all-star cast of musicians including Bob Weir with Ramblin’ Jack Elliott, as well as Bonnie Raitt, Jason Isbell, Lucinda Williams, Brandi Carlile, Margo Price, Kacey Musgraves, Tyler Childers and many others.

The entire concert can be viewed via an on-demand replay of the livestream presented by Mandolin. Monday’s show, as well as the four other “You Got Gold: Celebrating the Life & Songs of John Prine” concerts are available on Mandolin through midnight on Friday, October 14. Net proceeds from “You Got Gold” will benefit the Hello In There Foundation, a nonprofit dedicated to honoring the legacy of John Prine’s generous spirit through community philanthropy.

The tribute to Prine began on Monday evening with Brandi Carlile and Lucius performing the final song Prine recorded, “I Remember Everything.” The programming continued with one performance after another of many of Prine’s outstanding original songs, often backed by members of Prine’s band. Other performers included Chris Isaak & Nicole Atkins, Hiss Golden Messenger, Birds Of Chicago’s Allison Russell and JT Nero, I’m With Her, The War And Treaty, Nathaniel Rateliff, Shawn Camp, Leyla McCalla, The Milk Carton Kids, Lyle Lovett, Dwight Yoakam and Tre Burt.

Bob Weir & Ramblin’ Jack Elliott teamed up for “Great Rain,” while Bonnie Raitt and Brandi Carlile came together for “Angel From Montgomery.” Jason Isbell’s contribution was a solo rendering of “Souvenirs.” Margo Price delivered a rendition of “Sweet Revenge,” which Tyler Childers followed with “Yes I Guess They Oughta Name A Drink After You.”

Lucinda Williams debuted a new original song, “What Could Go Wrong” as did Kacey Musgraves with “Walk In Peace.” Prine’s son Tommy Prine helped lead a sing-along “Happy Birthday To You” and traded verses with Dwight Yoakam during the encore offering of “Paradise” that saw all the participants returning to the Ryman stage, including John Prine’s widow Fiona Prine.
