The ever-prolific King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard dropped new single “Hate Dancin’” and a video for the track shot, edited and directed by John Angus Stewart. The song appears on Changes, their third new album of the month, which arrives via the Australian band’s KGLW imprint on October 28.
Changes follows Laminated Denim and Ice, Death, Planets, Lungs, Mushrooms And Lava. King Gizz put out Laminated Denim consisting of two 15-minute tracks last Wednesday just five days after Ice, Death, Planets, Lungs, Mushrooms And Lava came out featuring seven tracks each played in a different mode of the major scale.
The seven-track Changes was originally planned as the band’s fifth album of 2017 but King Gizz instead decided to focus their efforts on Gumboot Soup at the time. However, the group didn’t forget about Changes and will soon release the LP as their sixth of 2022. “I think of Changes as a song-cycle,” explained Stu Mackenzie. “Every song is built around this one chord progression – every track is like a variation on a theme. But I don’t know if we had the musical vocabulary yet to complete the idea at that time. We recorded some of it then, including the version of ‘Exploding Suns’ that’s on the finished album. But when the sessions were over, it just never felt done. It was like this idea that was in our heads, but we just couldn’t reach. We just didn’t know yet how to do what we wanted to do.”
“Hate Dancin’” is an unusually short and poppy number for a band known for long and complex compositions. “I started writing a song about how I hate dancing, but then I realized that I love dancing,” added Mackenzie. The sextet fittingly shimmies and shakes along with “Hate Dancin’” in the visual for a song that runs just over three minutes.
