Pavement hit The Met Philadelphia on Wednesday night. The recently reunited band welcomed Philly native Kurt Vile for the favorite “Zurich Is Stained.”
Pavement — Stephen Malkmus, Spiral Stairs, Bob Nastanovich, Mark Ibold, Steve West and touring member Rebecca Cole — kicked off the concert with “Grounded” from their 1995 album Wowee Zowee. “Summer Babe” from the band’s 1992 debut LP Slanted And Enchanted then came ahead of Brighten The Corners’ (1997) “Stereo.” The band dipped evenly from those three records, at five songs a piece, and also offered four cuts from 1994’s Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain and three off 1999’s Terror Twilight in the 25-song show.
Following “Embassy Row,” the band welcomed well-documented Pavement disciple and former Matador label mate Kurt Vile for “Zurich Is Stained.” Malkmus introduced the singer-songwriter saying, “We got the mayor of Philadelphia on vocals here.” Kurt then led the band through the Slanted And Enchanted standout. The rest of the main set included additional favorites like “Type Slowly,” “Harness Your Hopes” and set closer “Cut Your Hair.” Pavement would return for a five song encore with two of the tunes, “Major Leagues,” and “The Hexx” appearing on 1999’s Terror Twilight. “Give It A Day” from the 1996 EP Pacific Trim then proceeded “Stop Breathin” to conclude the concert. Pavement heads to Washington D.C. tonight ahead of two-night stand in Atlanta and Austin before heading to Europe. Check out the band’s itinerary:
