Phil Lesh & Friends arrived at The Capitol Theatre on Friday night to kick off a nine-show residency. The Grateful Dead bassist’s annual stay in Port Chester, NY will culminate on Halloween night as he welcomes a rotating cast of Friends to The Cap.

For this first show, Lesh was joined by Grahame Lesh (guitar), John Scofield (guitar), Eric Krasno (guitar), Karl Denson (saxophone), Ivan Neville (keyboards), Alex Koford (drums), and Mikaela Davis (harp). Together, this crack team of musicians wove through a set of Grateful Dead favorites while passing off vocal duties like a baton race.

Ivan Neville was first up for the show-opening “Iko Iko” before Lesh grabbed the mic for a fittingly fall “Cold Rain and Snow”. Krasno was then up to bat for “Brown Eyed Women” after which the younger Lesh took over for “Dire Wolf”. The Terrapin Family Band drummer Alex Koford then helmed “Stagger Lee” before it was back to the top of the order as Krasno led a set-closing “Deal”.

The second set opened with the perennial pairing of “China Cat Sunflower” and “I Know You Rider”, with the entire band joining together to shine their headlights on the speeding musical locomotive. The following “Truckin’” then ignited a nearly 40-minute sequence of seamless playing that moved through “He’s Gone” and into “New Speedway Boogie”.

A journey ’round “The Wheel” then followed before Ivan Neville closed down the set with The Crickets‘ “Not Fade Away”. As the band retook the stage while the crowd was still clapping along to the beat, Phil Lesh gave his traditional donor rap before closing out the show with a Krasno-led “Shakedown Street”.
