Rock and Roll Hall Of Famer Eddie Van Halen died on this date in 2020 at the age of 65 following a stroke. The acclaimed and supremely talented guitarist for Van Halen – the namesake band he co-founded in 1972 with his brother, drummer Alex Van Halen, bassist Michael Anthony and frontman David Lee Roth – was an explosive figure in rock ‘n’ roll history, coming through with groundbreaking and expert showmanship.
Throughout Eddie and the band’s career – which included Roth’s exit in 1985 and the ensuing Sammy Hagar era, as well as stints with Gary Cherone fronting the band and Eddie’s son Wolfgang Van Halen playing bass – the virtuoso guitarist’s performances on stage and in the studio were truly what set the band apart from others.
As Wolfgang told Howard Stern shortly after his father’s passing, “You can’t have Van Halen without Eddie Van Halen.”
As the primary figure within the band, Eddie’s guitar work was prominently featured on most, if not all of the band’s many well-known songs. Beyond the showcase of his signature tapping style on the instrumental “Eruption,” Eddie’s skillful, powerful and melodic technique produced some of rock’s most identifiable riffs.
