As they did the previous evenings, the NSO conducted by Steven Reineke began the evening with an “Overture.” Guitarist Bob Weir, bassist Don Was, drummer Jay Lane and pianist Jeff Chimenti along with Wolfpack members cellist Alex Kelly, violinist Mads Tolling, trombonist Adam Theis, trumpeter Brian Switzer and woodwind specialist Sheldon Brown emerged for a three-song seamless sequence.

The segment started with one of Bobby’s signature songs, “Playing In The Band,” followed by additional GD favorites “Uncle John’s Band” and “Dark Star,” the latter limited to the first verse. “Jack Straw” followed ahead of first set closer, “Morning Dew,” which boasted a gorgeous orchestral opening with just Bobby singing before the rest of the ensemble ramped things up including a rousing coda.

The second frame commenced with “The Other One,” which carried another symphonic opening that perfectly captured the song’s psychedelia. A 12-minute “Shakedown Street” followed ahead of a stunning “Days Between” with just Bobby and the NSO. Weir then took a moment to address the audience and thank the woman, Helen, who planted the seed for the symphony shows when she asked Bobby to do a benefit for a local orchestra some years back. Weir also thanked Stanford University’s Giancarlo Aquilanti, whom Bobby and the band worked closely with and who arranged the music for the symphony.

Weir also noted that they would be working more with the orchestra. “We can further integrate with the orchestra and we will be working on that,” the guitarist said before adding, “What we want to do is, be a part of the orchestra. Not just a band playing with the orchestra, but part of it.” The ensemble and NSO then finished up “Dark Star,” “Uncle John’s Band” and “Playing In The Band” before concluding the set with a beautiful “Brokedown Palace.”

Bob Weir & Wolf Bros and The Wolf Pack returned sans NSO to deliver a complete rendering of the “Terrapin Station Suite,” which stretched to 24 minutes.
