Tedeschi Trucks Band frontwoman and guitarist Susan Tedeschi was the guest on the latest episode of JamBase partner Osiris Media’s Salute The Songbird With Maggie Rose. Susan chatted with Maggie about female guitar players, how she crafted her incredible voice, Tedeschi Trucks Band’s amazing new I Am The Moon project and more to kick off the podcast’s fourth season.
The conversation gets underway with Tedeschi talking about her guitar playing and how she didn’t really come to play the electric guitar until she was in her twenties and even then it took her a couple of years to feel confident soloing. She also spoke about the lack of visibility for female lead guitar players.
“Growing up the only women I knew of playing guitar were like Lita Ford, Nancy Wilson in Heart, Bonnie Raitt, Joni Mitchell. These were women that played guitar. But it was never like, ‘oh they’re Jimi Hendrix, or Eric Clapton or Freddie King.’ They just weren’t in the limelight like that. You didn’t know a woman soloist really. I did learn later that there was Sister Rosetta Tharpe and people like Memphis Minnie out there doing it. But you just didn’t hear about it. So it was kind of a big deal. I just thought women should know they can do this too. So now, it’s amazing to see all these young girls, they’re just ripping guitar. They’re tearing it up. And it’s just so great to see.”
Susan also talked about being a student of guitar and some of her influences including her husband and collaborator Derek Trucks. “He’s such an incredible guitar player that I’m always learning and watching him. I don’t even know what he’s doing half the time because he plays in Open E and I play in Standard Tuning. He thinks differently; he thinks outside the box. But he’s always expanding on what he’s learning.”
The conversation also touches on balancing touring and family life as well as some of Susan’s personal history as well as she and Derek’s time together. The discussion then turned to Tedeschi’s history as a singer and the amazing voice she crafted from her many vocal influences. Next, Maggie and Susan talked about Tedeschi Trucks Band’s fantastic new I Am The Moon four album and film project.
Susan gave a rundown of how the project came about including how it was inspired by TTB’s live record covering Derek & The Dominos’ Layla And Other Assorted Love Songs as well as the poem that inspired the name Layla, Layla and Majnun, by 12th-century Persian poet Nizami Ganjavi. TTB vocalist Mike Mattison brought the poem to the band when the pandemic took hold in hopes they could tell both sides of the Layla story. Susan talked about the album’s fascinating evolution, current events and more.
